Exploring Limoges on a Perfect Saturday

On a perfect Saturday, we embarked on a day trip to visit Limoges, a city renowned for its rich history and vibrant culture. Blessed with a beautiful sunny weather day, our visit unfolded like a delightful tapestry of experiences.

A Lively and Historic City

Limoges, with a population of approximately 120,000 inhabitants, is the capital of the Haute-Vienne department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. When looking at a map of France it’s just south-west of the centre.

As we wandered through its medieval streets, we were captivated by the half-timbered houses and cobblestone pathways that whispered tales of centuries past. The city was alive with activity; locals and tourists alike filled the streets, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.

Shops, Pottery, and Porcelain in Limoges

Our exploration led us to charming shops showcasing Limoges’ famed pottery and porcelain—a testament to the city’s long-standing tradition in ceramic arts. Each piece displayed the meticulous craftsmanship that has earned Limoges its reputation. Interspersed among these boutiques were quaint cafés, perfect for a leisurely coffee, and bookstores that beckoned with the promise of literary treasures.

We also stumbled upon a stunning pop-up by L’amoureuse, a local creative studio known for its elegant table styling and event design. Their breathtaking display featured beautifully curated tablescapes for special occasions—each one a work of art that invited you to imagine long, joy-filled dinners in the French countryside. A Visit to the Covered Market

A highlight of our visit to Limoges was the covered market, Les Halles Centrales de Limoges. This vibrant marketplace offered a feast for the senses, with stalls brimming with fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and an array of local delicacies. The market’s architecture, a blend of iron and glass, added to its historic charm.

A Surprising Event: The National Waiters’ Race

Serendipity graced our day as we stumbled upon the Course Nationale des Serveuses et des Garçons de Café, taking place in the city center. This unique event, translating to the “National Race of Waitresses and Waiters,” is a spirited competition where participants navigate a set course while balancing trays laden with glasses and bottles. The challenge tests their speed, agility, and most importantly, their poise under pressure. The festivities began with a children’s version of the race, drawing smiles and cheers from the crowd, before the professionals took to the streets, showcasing impressive skill and balance.

The Art of Being a Server in France

In France, being a server is not just a side job—it’s a respected profession. Unlike in some countries where waiting tables is seen as temporary work, French servers train extensively, developing a deep knowledge of food, wine, and customer service. Many attend hospitality schools to refine their skills, and service in a good café or restaurant is considered an art. The Course Nationale des Serveuses et des Garçons de Café is not just a fun competition; it’s a celebration of the grace, professionalism, and expertise that French servers bring to their craft.

A Wonderful Day in Limoges

Our day in Limoges was nothing short of wonderful. The city’s rich heritage, vibrant atmosphere, and unexpected joy of witnessing the waiters’ race made our visit truly memorable. If you’re looking for a historic and lively destination, you should definitely visit Limoges and experience its timeless charm for yourself!
