Normandy: the land of Coastlines, Villages and History

There’s something about Normandy, France that makes time feel layered. Medieval half-timbered towns sit just down the road from Impressionist seascapes, while bustling markets hum in villages that have barely changed in centuries. This Normandy Travel Guide brings together the best places to slow travel in Normandy, from its coastline to its countryside, so you can explore at a slower pace – and soak up every detail along the way.

Why Visit Normandy?

With its dramatic cliffs at Étretat, historic D-Day beaches, and towns like Honfleur and Rouen, Normandy offers a mix of art, history, and natural beauty. It’s a region where you can admire a Monet painting, eat oysters straight from the sea and walk streets that feel plucked from a historical storybook.

Itineraries in Normandy

Whether you have just a long weekend or an entire week to linger, Normandy is the kind of place that rewards every extra day you can give it. From medieval towns to windswept cliffs, there’s always another story waiting just around the corner. I’ve sketched out a few itineraries to help you make the most of your time here. Whether you’re hopping on the train from Paris for a short escape or planning a longer road trip through the region.

Even though I have created multi destination itineraries below I strongly advise you settle into one place to lay your head and do day trips from there. It’s a much more relaxed way of exploring than having to check-out on time and getting settle into a new place the same day. And that way too if the mood strikes you to stay put and do absolutely nothing you can!

The Art of Travelling Slowly in Normandy

Whether you arrive by train, bus, or car, Normandy rewards the traveller who takes their time. Its beauty isn’t just in the cliffs or cathedrals, it’s in the quiet moments between them. The salty air carrying the sweet smell of the jasmine that line so many of its country roads, the chatter at a village market, the simple joy of discovering a place that feels like it’s been waiting for you.
